I. Thou shalt not take the name of the lord thy god in vain

When we utter the name of God, do we do it with reverence?

"who is like to thee among the strong, o lord? who is like t thee, glorious in holiness, terrible and praiseworthy, doing wonders?" -exodus 15.11

Here are excerpts from Catholic resources to assist us in the understanding of this Commandment:

  • Reverence is a mixture of fear, love, and esteem.

  • We should frequently call upon the name of God with true and heartfelt devotion.

  • Call upon the name of God in times of trouble, for He said, "Call upon Me in th eday of trouble, I will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify Me." Psalm 49:15

  • Frequently praise and magnify almighty God. "I will bless the Lord at all times; HIs praise shall be always in my mouth." Psalm 33:2

  • Careless use of His name should be avoided.

  • Avoid bitter words against God.

  • Avoid cursing and swearing. "He loved cursing, and it shall come upon him." Psalm 108:18

  • Avoid blaphemy and sacrilege. "God is not mocked." Galatians 6:7

  • Avoid simony.  This consists in selling spiritualities for money, or the equivalent of money.
